THE MAN WHO COLOURS STARS is now released as a classic DVD set. Disc 1 is the award-winning film of David Malin’s life and work. Disc 2 is a collection of more 200 masterpieces of the cosmos photographed by David Malin. The images are accompanied with optional captions.
David Malin pioneered modern astro-photography. His images of the heavens unveiled our Galaxy – and the galaxies beyond – in the glory of full natural colour. He showed us the stars as if our eyes were a thousand times more sensitive.
Today, despite the advent of electronic techniques, Malin’s photographs stand the test of time. The film celebrates the life, science and art of this humble genius. Malin’s talent to explain the cosmos simply and graphically transfers beautifully to the screen. With his lavish portraits of deep space, he makes cosmology clear and accessible.
Working through two powerful telescopes at the Anglo-Australian Observatory, New South Wales, Malin’s ingenious camera and printing techniques enabled astronomers to study distance, movement, structure and evolution. His plates caused scientists to re-think galactic development.
THE MAN WHO COLOURS STARS traces Malin’s pursuit of excellence – from Lancashire, England, his childhood home without electricity, to electrifying nights with mountaintop telescopes in the Australian Outback – colouring stars to a Beethoven symphony. Location shooting took place in Australia, England and the USA.
